Welcome to the 2007 British Composer Awards which enters its fifth year of celebrating, rewarding and profiling the work of classical composers.
As hosts to the Awards, the British Academy of Composers & Songwriters continues to work in partnership with the Performing Right Society and with BBC Radio 3, both of whom provide the commitment and support which help to ensure the success of the Awards.
More than 300 works were submitted for judging and the nominations shortlist was anounced on Friday 26 October before the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s 60th birthday concert for Academy Fellow John Adams. The Awards reach their climax on December 5th with the prize ceremony at the Thameside Glaziers Hall.
“The simple fact that these 300 works have been newly created and publicly performed – and the thought of the numbers of audiences and artists involved in the process – is an immensely encouraging indicator of the strength and value of creative activity in the UK today,” says Sarah Rodgers, Concert Chair of the British Academy of Composers & Songwriters, which hosts the Awards.
A new category for 2007 is the International Award, for non-UK composers who have had a British premiere during the qualifying period. As Sarah Rodgers says: "The successful introduction of an International Award gives a more complete picture of new work performed in the last year and it also sends a message to composers everywhere that there are no borders to a healthy and vibrant creative community."
Voting is still open for the BBC Radio Listeners’ Award. Among the twelve nominated composers for this year’s BBC Radio 3 Listeners’ Award are familiar names such as Julian Anderson, Jonathan Harvey and last year’s Choral Award winner Judith Bingham. Also a winner in last year’s Awards was the Irish composer Brian Irvine, who appears alongside new names to the Listeners’ Award list, Django Bates, Param Vir and Guto Puw.
BBC Radio 3’s 2006 Choir of the Year, Chantage, will perform at the Awards ceremony on December 5th, as will the BBC Singers. This is part of this year’s special emphasis on choral singing. The PRS Foundation for New Music is making a £5000 award to the winner of the choral category, while the liturgical category is the subject of a £1000 prize from the Worshipful Company of Musicians.
