The British Academy is a community of over 2,000 composers and songwriters.

We are the recognised trade association representing all genres of music writing.  Our role is to provide a single voice for the UK composer and songwriter community, within the industry, to the government and to the European Commission.

Membership of the Academy is open to anyone who is actively writing music.

If the music you are writing today is to have any value in tomorrow’s world, the Academy needs your support in its continuing campaign to protect the value of copyright in an ever changing technological world.  Equally, we need to continue our campaign to create a more favourable environment for today's music writers, whatever their area of music.

We have two main categories of membership, dependant on where you are in your musical career:

Member

Members are emerging writers who have not yet become a member of any royalty collection society or who have recently joined one, such as the PRS.

If you have just finished college, are composing as a hobby or have recently started to perform/write then this category of membership is for you.

Professional

The Academy's professional membership requires the composer or songwriter to be an `Associate' or `Full' member of the PRS or equivalent overseas collection society (please contact the PRS directly if you are unsure of your status with them), or to have comparable Grand Rights income or similar royalty.

Please go to BENEFITS to find out more about our exclusive services.

If you have any questions regarding your eligibility for membership or which category you should join under please don't hesitate to contact the Membership Department on 020 7636 2929.
