Biography
John Rose was born in London in 1928 of Dutch parents, and was educated at the Diocesan College, Cape Town, 1942-46. There he studied organ with Dr Claude Brown and wrote music which was performed by the Cape Town Municipal Orchestra. He continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Music, and at Oxford under Edmund Rubbra.
Subsequently, he worked mainly in adult education as founder of the St Albans Chamber Choir, as extra-mural tutor for various universities, and as Lecturer in Further Education, Glasgow.
After a long creative hiatus, he resumed composing in 1993 with the completion of Op. 8 for organ, an instrument for which he has felt a special affinity.
