Biography
I wrote my first song at the age of 12; it was entitled "I wish I was back in old England now", and it was a narrative about living away in the United States. I can remember the tune perfectly, but unfortunately the words have been lost in the mists of time! After that I wrote the odd song, just dabbling and not taking it seriously. Then, in 1993, I was watching a series on BBC2 on the music of the 70s, and in one episode singer-songwriters were being featured. One song struck me in particular - Janis Ian's "At 17" - and gave me the inspiration to sit down and write a song that might have the affect that "At 17" had on me.
I've written many songs since then, which I play at the folk clubs in Southampton and the Candle Club (open stage) at the Talking Heads pub in Southampton. In 2001 I gained a judges' special recommendation for "The Fox Hunt", which I entered into the Woolston & Netley Folk Club Song Competition, and 3rd prize for "What is Christmas" in the St Denys Folk & Blues Club Christmas Song Competition. I am selling a 4-track CD on a website called Peoplesound - you can find this at www.peoplesound.com/artist/jaquie The tracks on the CD have been played on local radio in Southampton, in August 2001.
My songs are a mixture of pop and folk styles, mostly written using acoustic guitar. I'm also branching out into composing - I've recently had a piece performed by a contemporary group of which I'm a member, and I'm working on another piece.

- Friend - This is a ballad on the theme of friendship. I like to think of it as my answer to "You've got a friend".
- The smell of Obsession - This was inspired by a work colleague who wore Obsession after-shave!
- Talk of taverns - I wrote this song about a guy I had a crush on who was a member of CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale). He has a particular interest in pub architecture and sometimes gave talks about it, hence "Talk of taverns".
- Talk to me - I wrote this because my ex-partner complained that I didn't talk to him enough! So I wrote it from his point of view, quoting some of the things he used to say. This was played on local radio.
- The landlord's girlfriend's best friend's boyfriend
- Don't do it girl
- The fox hunt - As mentioned above, I was awarded a judges' special recommendation for this song in a local song competition. It is a folk song telling the story of a fox hunt.
- Footsteps
- Aching 18 - I think this is the song I always wanted to write after first hearing "At 17". It's about someone I had a crush on in the 6th Form who I recently found out is gay! Just my luck!
- Cat Suite
