I was born in Bolton in 1956 and have lived in the North West for most of my life. I went to Thornleigh Salesian College at the time when Fr. 'Jock' McGovern was the music teacher and was instantly converted into a Tuba player by his marvellous enthusiasm.
I went, eventually, to Manchester University to do my BA followed by a PGCE at Didsbury. Thereafter I became a teacher of music in Wigan. I have stayed in the same school for 18 years and enjoyed most of it. The thrill of 'seeing the lights come on' when a child finally realises they have created something wonderful is amazing!
I began composing and arranging when I was at college and have written over 80 pieces (some still in production) mostly for brass band or brass ensemble, but a number of my later works have been for woodwind, orchestra and voice - usually for my students to perform. My two Christmas carols were performed this year at our Carol service.
My main influences are Renaissance and baroque music, especially for brass, but also 20th century experimental music.
