Biography

Barrie's formal training began at Canterbury Cathedral Choir School where his position as Head Chorister won him a scholarship to the Kings School. He continued his musical education at the Guildhall where he studied percussion with Gilbert Webster before embarking on a career as an orchestral and session musician.

His wide musical vocabulary led to a distinguished period in record production with partner Dave Mackay. Credits from this period include The Bee Gees, Olivia Newton-John, Dennis Roussos, Gary Glitter, Johnny Halliday and Bonnie Tyler. Additionally, Barrie worked for many years as one of the UK's leading musical directors, notably for Cliff Richard.

Barrie has composed film and television music since the early 80s, and his creativity was recognised when he won the 1992 Ivor Novello Award for 'The Darling Buds of May'.

Barrie is a director of the MCPS and a founding director of the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters.
