Biography

A composer and arranger with an extremely varied output, Audrey Podmore has a special interest in developing creative music resources for amateur players/singers of all ages and widening access to performance by accommodating individual performer requirements. She is content-author of the GridPlay Creative Explorations software, which supports improvisational activities from pre-school to adult. Her music occasionally embraces atonality, or polytonality, but there is always a rich vein of melody and textures are often contrapuntal. Folk music is a great inspiration for Audrey and the modes are her most instinctive musical language. It was involvement with the lively organisation, 'Contemporary Music for Amateurs' which encouraged Audrey to write for groups other than her own pupils and church members and she has particularly enjoyed working with COMA string-players. Hill-walking is a favourite leisure activity and some pieces owe much to the atmosphere of familiar landscapes.

A favourite work is "A Mother's War", a setting of the Latin hymn, "Salve Regina", for soprano, clarinet, violin and cello. The first performance of this work, by soprano, Jane Manning, and members of the ensemble, Gemini, was described as "deeply moving". The serious reflection of "A Mother's War" is counter-balanced by the lively humour of pieces like "Absurd!" for clarinet and piano, with lyrics intended purely for the entertainment of young clarinettists.

Other compositions include unaccompanied songs, songs for voice & piano, cantatas for children's voices & classroom instruments, piano solos, pieces in classical, folk and jazz styles for solo instruments and piano, string quartets, mixed ensembles and Christian liturgical music.
