Composer/Lyricist: Composer

Biography

Alex Patterson is slowly becoming one of Northern Ireland’s bright and upcoming young composers. Born in 1988, Alex only began learning the piano at the age of 12 and since then has been performing and developing his interest in composition.

Currently Director of Music and Organist of his local church, Bryansford Parish, Alex can be found playing the organ and leading the choir in Sunday Worship each Sunday morning. He has a knack for choral direction and has directed many musical events that have been held in the church to raise money for local charities.

Alex’s natural singing ability earned him a place as Tenor 1 in the highly acclaimed Ulster Youth Choir in 2005 and he has regularly performed at concerts and outdoor gigs with them.

His first compositional experience was at the tender age of 13 when he wrote the melody for some words he found lying around. The church choir later performed the anthem at a special service. Composing for choral forces has been something Alex has said he has enjoyed doing and which has leaded him to compose a few Christmas Carols. His first carol entitled “King’s Carol”, premiered in Down Cathedral by the Down High School Chamber Choir in December 2004. The work was greatly praised by the headmaster Mr. Jack Ferris who eagerly awaits the composers next carol.

Alex's interest in film music came after hearing the Oscar winning score to "The Lord of the Rings" by composer Howard Shore. This has lead him to aspire to one day become a film composer himself.

Alex’s music has many influences. Composers George Gershwin, Ralph Vaughan Williams and John Williams have certainly influenced the composer's take on orchestral music giving him a post-romantic style. His work tends to be more melodic and is supported by firm tonal foundations.
