Sam was born in West Yorkshire on 17th March 1982. He graduated in Music from the University of Nottingham in 2003. Whilst at University Sam was commissioned to compose a number of concert pieces. After graduating he began working for George Fenton. He worked in various roles on films such as Valiant, Stage Beauty and Mrs Henderson Presents.
During this time he also worked as a freelance composer and in 2005 he was commissioned by the London Gay Symphony Orchestra to write a piece for their World Aids Day concert. He also began writing scores for short films. Inside saw the beginning of a continuing working relationship with the Irish director Brian Philip Davis. He also scored other shorts including Undying Love and Call Me Harry.
In 2006 Sam began working as a composer in his own right. His first project was the short The Poet and the Bear. He went on to score an independent feature film You’re Fired and Planet Earth Diaries, the “Making of” section of the BBC documentary series Planet Earth, which also involved arranging and reworking elements of the score from the main programmes.
In 2007 Sam scored the short Checkout, the pilot episode and first series of the Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures for CBBC on BBC1 and the pilot episode of Being Human for BBC3.
As well as composing, Sam is a talented orchestrator and arranger and enjoys these almost as much as composing original music.
Sam is currently composing the music to the second series of The Sarah Jane Adventures as well as a number of short films. He will also be scoring Brian Philip Davis’ first feature film The Amazing Donna.
