BBC Commissioning Guidelines
First annual review of BBC Commissioning Guidelines.
The guidelines for the commissioning of music for in-house BBC productions recently underwent their first annual review.
Devised in 2007 by the Academy, the BBC and the Musicians Union, the guidelines aim to clarify procedures when composers are engaged by the BBC.
The one page document contains 12 clauses, including one which sets out the important principle that commissioning and any conversations about music publishing are entirely separate processes. It also states that, “The decision regarding which composer to contract is entirely the responsibility of individual BBC programme makers.”
When the guidelines were reviewed, a few minor changes were made in order to keep the document up-to-date and relevant. Members, especially those working for the BBC, should familiarise themselves with the guidelines, which are available in pdf form in the Members area of the website - click on "Resources", then "Legal" to access the document.
