Representatives of the British Academy attended the inaugural ARTMUSFAIR in Helsinki (2nd - 4th October 08).
ARTMUSFAIR aims to build a bridge between composers and the contemporary music business, and to extend and strengthen cooperation and networking between all professionals from across Europe active in contemporary music. The event centred around concerts, workshops on creation and funding of contemporary music and Project Stages where regional and pan-European projects were presented.
ARTMUSFAIR was the initiative of the European Composers Forum, the united voice of classical music writers in Europe, in which the British Academy plays a leading role, and was supported by the Society of Finnish Composers. The British Academy plans to host the second ARTMUSFAIR in November 2009 in Glasgow. More details will follow At the same time as ARTMUSFAIR meetings were held of the umbrella pan-European lobbying body ECSA where real progress was made on issues such as the future of collective management of rights and coercive publishing practices. Once again the British Academy played a pivotal role in forming and driving forward the agenda of ECSA and its constituent bodies APCOE, FFACE and ECF through the active participation of David Ferguson (Chairman), Patrick Rackow (CEO) and Chris Smith (Media Executive member).
